Livestock export company Purcell Brothers is sending a boat of Friesian-type bulls to Libya at the end of this week.

The vessel started loading in Waterford Port on Thursday under the supervision of the Department of Agriculture, Kevin Purcell confirmed to the Irish Farmers Journal.

The consignment is for up to 2,200 bulls weighing approximately 400kg, the Irish Farmers Journal understands.

In March, Purcell Brothers sent its first export order of 2019 to Libya.

In recent years, the company has been involved in exporting weanling bulls to Turkey.

Live exports to countries outside the EU have picked up this year, with boats destined for Libya, Turkey and soon Algeria. A new veterinary health certificate with Algeria was agreed this week, creating more favourable conditions for Irish exporters.
