FrieslandCampina announced that it will invest €90m to expand its capacity to convert internally sourced whey into premium protein ingredients for performance, early life and medical nutrition.
The investment, which will include upgrades to three separate production sites in the Netherlands, is expected to reach full operational capacity in 2028.
This announcement is a continuation of FrieslandCampina’s focus on whey.
In March, the co-op completed the expansion of production facilities at its Borculo, Netherlands, facility, which saw a doubling of whey protein isolate capacity there.
In January, the acquisition was completed of Wisconsin Whey, described as a leading US-based producer of whey protein isolates.
Next step
President of FrieslandCampina Ingredients Anne Peter Lindeboom said: “Global demand for advanced protein solutions continues to accelerate. This programme is the next step in our broader investment strategy to lead in high-value proteins.”
Globally, dairy processors are increasingly focusing on whey protein production, as forecasts by industry experts suggest that it will be the major growth area for demand over the coming years.
In Ireland, Tirlán has started work on its €126m whey processing facility in Ballyragget, which is expected to come into production by the middle of 2027.
