The community of Carnew in Co Wicklow will lay Arthur Quinn to rest this Thursday. Arthur was well known among the farming community through the running of Carnew Mart.
Arthur’s father, Arthur Quinn Sr, moved to Carnew in the 1940s and began working in the agri-supply and grocery business. In the early 1950s he started a sheep sale and in 1965 built Carnew Mart on its current site. He introduced cattle and sheep sales on alternate Thursdays with pig sales and quarterly horse sales also commonplace at the time.
His son Arthur ably learnt the mart and property trade growing and developing the mart and in 1983 started the Saturday cattle sale which remains today. He passed on his experience and wisdom to his son David and David’s wife Eilish, who run the mart and Quinn Property Sales, and remained involved in the business and a regular attendee at sale days.
