Austria is set to become the first EU country to impose a total ban on glyphosate products.

On Tuesday, members of Austria’s parliament backed a bill brought by the Social Democratic Party to ban glyphosate products.

Glyphosate is the main ingredient in the popular herbicide Roundup, which is owned by Monsanto.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) previously found that glyphosate was “probably” carcinogenic, but this finding was fiercely debated and the product was approved for use in the EU until 2022.

French president Emmanuel Macron had previously pledged to ban glyphosate but had to row back on his statement when there was outcry from French farmers who pointed out that in many cases there was no workable alternative herbicide to grow crops.
