In the south of the country, many farmers with cows and young calves are opting to turn them out if ground conditions are suitable to carry stock. As temperatures remain low and with the risk of poor weather conditions returning, farmers should target the most sheltered fields on the farm to let out stock.

Herd cows and calves at least once a day and check for any signs of chills, scours or pneumonia. If there is a history of tetany on the farm, make sure cows are getting licks or calmag in meal, etc. Preferably de-horn these calves before turnout to avoid handling again or forgetting about them.
