What is going on with the Government’s fodder aid scheme? From the outside, it would appear to be a fairly straightforward scheme with Teagasc staff on the ground to determine eligibility of farmers. Instead, confusion continues to unfold with the Irish Farmers Journal being contacted by farmers who were told they are ineligible due to location. This is despite Minister Creed repeatedly stating the scheme is not area-specific. The scheme was introduced to help relieve pressure but it is having the opposite effect. Unfortunately, overly complex schemes that restrict farmer participation are all too familiar. We note that approximately 50% of applicants that participated in the Crop Loss Support Measure for 2016 have to date received compensation.
