With the herd only established a few years ago, it means that all cows offered are young, with the majority being first- and second-calvers.

The original purchases for the herd came from the Goulding, Carrigroe and Gurtaree herds.

Top lines

When selecting their cow base, the duo tried to select cows from some of the country’s top lines. These include the highly rated Dakota line from Carrigroe, which has produced numerous high-sellers in recent years.

Also from the Carrigroe herd is the Kian family which produced Gene Ireland bull Carrigroe Kian.

The Missie and Tibbie lines originate from top herds in Canada and have made a serious impact on Irish herds over the past two decades

From the Goulding herd, lines such as Missie, Perry, Tibbie and Princess can be seen across the herd. The Missie and Tibbie lines originate from top herds in Canada and have made a serious impact on Irish herds over the past two decades.

Much of the stock is in-calf to the herd's stock bull Carrigroe Nathan, which will also be offered at the sale. This HF Rebel son is out of the Lady Tinge family line. He carries five stars on most traits with a dairy beef index of €119.

Other AI sires used in previous years include Rebel, Americano and KYA.

The herd is in the BDGP, so a good number of animals are genotyped four and five stars and suitable to meet the requirements of the successful purchasers.

The sale takes place in Kilmallock Mart at 1pm on Saturday 21 March.
