The canteen in Delvin Mart will reopen in the new year after it was served with a closure order by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) in November.

On 22 November, the FSAI issued a closure order for the mart’s canteen, saying: “The conditions observed pose or are likely to pose a serious risk of contamination rendering the foodstuffs in this area unfit or injurious to health.”

The FSAI was concerned over the evidence of rodent droppings in the kitchen area.

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, Delvin Mart manager John Gilligan said the canteen had needed an upgrade and that a refurbishment is under way.

He said: “The canteen is only open once a week and there has been no issue with the food or from customers. After a general inspection was carried out, it was decided that new equipment was needed.”

He said the canteen would be reopened when the mart resumed trade on 10 January.
