A total of 108 organisations that protect animal welfare will receive €2,751,000 with immediate effect, the Minister for Agriculture announced on Sunday.
“We are very fortunate in Ireland in having a voluntary sector dedicated to animal welfare and the organisations in receipt of today’s funding, together with their staff and volunteers, provide great support and commitment to protecting surrendered, abandoned and at-risk animals,” Minister Creed said.
He noted the reform of the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013 and the launching of the new draft strategy on animal welfare this year.

“The aim of this is to bring greater cohesion and coordination to the work on animal welfare being done by various groups,” Creed said. “The strategy has recently undergone a public consultation and the responses, which are currently being examined, have been very positive.”
The Department has provided over 4,000 free dog passports to animal welfare charities, valued at over €40,000, to date this year to re-home rescued pets in the UK. Creed urged those who are considering getting a pet this Christmas to consider adopting an animal from one of the many rescue organisations.
