The Drohan family have decided to have a clearance sale of the late Patrick Drohan’s suckler herd on Saturday 15 December at 1pm in New Ross Mart, Co Wexford.

Patrick, who died tragically in a farm accident last month, was a previous participant in the Teagasc/Irish Farmers Journal BETTER farm beef programme and he put a huge effort into breeding and genetics during his time.

Calf weight gains were some of the highest in the programme and Patrick had built up a herd of top-class suckler cows with high replacement indices.

Some of the cows are over €200 on the replacement index, putting them in the top 1% of all cows in the country.

The sale includes 57 four- and five-star in-calf cows, predominantly Limousin and Simmental homebred cows, plus 10 in-calf heifers, all of which were bred on farm.

The sale also includes two stock bulls; one Limousin and one Simmental.

Cows are calving in January, February and early March. Most of the herd have been genotyped as part of the BDGP.

The herd has consistently achieved below 360-day calving intervals and weaning over one calf/cow/year in recent years.
