Dunnes grew sales by 2.4% compared with the same period last year and secured 22.5% of grocery sales. This was thanks to a successful “shop and save” pomotion scheme encouraging shoppers to buy more during each visit, according to Kantar Worldpanel director David Berry.
Tesco had the fastest growth over the priod and came second, followed by Supervalu, which grew sales by a more modest 1.4% year-on-year.
The top three supermarket chains are within 0.3% market share of each other in what remains a highly competitive sector. Aldi and Lidl are tied on 11.2% market share each, with all other outlets sharing just 10.7% of sales.
