All roads lead to Elphin this weekend for the Irish Limousin Cattle Society’s premier spring sale

Viewing takes place from 9am to 12pm on Saturday 13 March. Potential viewers need to register with the mart and book a viewing slot with Elphin mart at 071-963 5061. Kilkenny auctioneer George Chandler will kick off the sale at 12.30pm live on martbids.ie.

Those wishing to purchase a bull on the day need to download the MartBids app or register on martbids.ie beforehand.

It’s important that this is completed well in advance of the sale. Elphin Mart has to approve potential customers to bid at the sale before they can bid on animals.

The Irish Limousin Cattle Society is offering free transport to central locations in Northern Ireland and to designated locations in the Republic of Ireland.

Irish Limousin Cattle Society president Trevor Masterson said: “The quality of bulls that are heading to this year’s sale is higher than I have seen in a good few years. With no shows taking place in 2020 many of these bulls have been unseen up to this and there is a lot of them that look very promising.

“All bulls come from herds that are participating in CHeCS accredited Johnes herd testing scheme. All bulls have also been fertility tested and come from high health status herds and all bulls are also export tested with direct export available to Northern Ireland on the day of the sale.’’

UK interest

With a share of bulls heading across the water at previous Irish Limousin Cattle Society sales, all eyes will be on Elphin as to what UK interest will be like.

Since 1 January 2021 under new Brexit rules animals cannot be exported direct from a sale across the water to Britain and have to have been on farm for 40 days prior to export to the UK.

This does not affect NI customers, but it means if a British customer buys an animal at the sale, this bull has to return to a farm for 40 days before the animal is exported.

Insurance

Fertility insurance has also become an issue for society sales since Brexit has taken effect. Bulls sold to the NI and Britain are not covered by the society’s fertility insurance. Bulls sold in ROI are covered as they were previously.

To help insure bulls sold across the water, there will be a contribution of 4.5% of the selling price towards insurance should a purchaser wish to opt for that.

Irish Farmers Journal pedigree editor Shane Murphy will be reporting live from the sale so keep an eye on Irish Farmers Journal social media channels for live coverage and farmersjournal.ie on Saturday evening for his sale report.
