Farmers should check their eligibility for a €1,000 grant launched by Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys.

The grant is aimed at self-employed sole traders and covers areas such as wages, fuel, new equipment, signage and personal protective equipment. Sole traders who have transitioned from the COVID-19 pandemic unemployment payment (PUP) since 18 May are eligible for the grant.

Figures from the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection show that 8,600 farmers were in receipt of the PUP on 4 May, but this has dropped considerably to 3,900 farmers.

Farmers who have off-farm businesses might also be able to get the grant and should check their eligibility.

Grant criteria includes:

  • Have been in receipt of the COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) or a Jobseekers payment and have closed their claim on or after 18 May 2020.
  • Have been operating a business prior to March 2020.
  • Have reopened their business that was closed due to COVID-19.
  • Are not liable for commercial rates.
  • Employ fewer than 10 people and have an annual turnover of less than €1m.
  • “The Enterprise Support Grant is designed to assist the self-employed, who are crucial to our economic recovery, to get back on their feet following the COVID-19 outbreak,” Minister Humphreys said.

“Whether it’s paying wages, fuel costs, purchasing PPE or signage – this is an important grant to assist the self-employed to reopen their business and get back doing what they do best – providing crucial and essential services in their communities.”

Funding may be sought for costs including:

  • Purchase of equipment, including signage and personal protective equipment.
  • Repairs, maintenance and installation of safety measures.
  • Salaries.
  • Vehicle running costs, including fuel.
