The Health and Safety Authority is investigating the death of a farmer in the Baltinglass area of Co Wicklow last week, a spokesperson told the Irish Farmers Journal.

The incident took place Thursday before last, when the farmer is understood to have been testing cattle with a vet.

Health and safety officers are examining the circumstances under which a cow broke out and hit the farmer.

The farmer was initially transported to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where he later died, prompting the HSA to investigate the incident as a fatality.

The HSA is embarking on a campaign of farm inspections this Tuesday, focusing on machinery.
