Drop calves were a terrific trade at Kilrea Mart last week, with 220 animals offered for sale. Bull calves reached a top price of £385 for a Limousin animal, with Angus calves selling as far as £330 for stronger lots.
Angus bulls typically sold upwards from £220 for calves under one month of age. Belgian Blue calves were also in demand, with prices ranging from £240 for one-month-old animals rising to a top price of £300.
Simmental bull calves sold to £320, with Hereford bulls selling to £250. Shorthorn bull calves sold to £265, with Fleckvieh bulls selling to £210. Friesian bull calves sold to £250 for stronger lots weaned off milk.
Heifer calves were also a super trade. Prices reached £375 for a Limousin animal. Strong Limousin heifers sold above the £300 mark, with younger lots making £205 to £220.
Blue heifer calves sold from £225 to a top of £280, with Angus heifers making £280 to £350. Hereford calves sold to £300 with Shorthorn heifers selling to £295.
