There was a very strong trade at Mohill Mart on Saturday, particularly for all good quality heavy types. Buyers were present from near and far with mart manager Stephen Hannon saying that cattle on show were all of very good quality with a strong proportion being R+ and U grade. The quality of stock was reflected in the prices and a very lively trade ensued.

Heavy bullocks

There was a good number of heavy bullocks over 700kg on offer, which in recent weeks have been scarce in sales around the west. Stephen said that there was very sharp demand for these, with prices frequently between €800 and €900 over the weight. Some of the best quality types made over €950 along with the weight and up to €1,075 over.

In price-per-kilo terms, the majority of these heavy steers sold from €2.20- €2.30/kg. A good proportion of heavy types were aged bullocks over 28 months, with some over 30 months. Age was not a deterrent when it came to demand for good quality heavy types, with little to no difference between the prices paid for over-aged stock as in-spec stock.

Classy

There was a strong trade for bullocks from 600kg to 700kg also, with good demand for those suitable for further feeding. Prices ranged mainly from €800 to €900 along with the weight, although there were some classy bullocks which made up to €1,000 over the weight, but these prices were scarce. Plain Angus cross and plain continentals sold from €2.00/kg to €2.10/kg.

Stores from 500kg to 600kg were fairly plentiful also, with solid demand. These did not make as much over the weight as the heavier short-keep and slaughter-fit types. Prices in the main ranged from €800 to €850 over the weight with some plainer types making from €700 to €800 over.

There were a few bullocks on offer from 450kg to 500kg with prices ranging from €600 to €750 over, with some reaching over €800 along with the weight.
