The former European Commissioner for Agriculture Dacian Ciolos has been appointed as leader of the the ALDE political group in the European Parliament, of which Fianna Fáil is a member. At the same meeting this Wednesday the party decided to change its name to "Renew Europe".

Renew Europe is the third-largest party in the Parliament, with 108 MEPs from 22 countries.

Ciolos (49) is an agronomist from Romania. He held the position of European Agriculture Commissioner from 2010 to 2014, after previously being Minister for Agriculture in Romania. Since then, he was prime minister of Romania from November 2015 to January 2017. He was elected MEP in the 2019 election.
