The past week has seen a large increase in the volume of calves on offer, with the majority of these being Friesian bulls. Prices have dropped as a result.
Calf numbers have taken a large jump right across the country. ICBF data shows that as numbers increased, the price paid for Friesian bull calves has dropped. However, this has a lot to do with the type of calves on offer.
The data shows a massive increase in the number of two-week-old bull calves in marts. These sold for €38/head on average, which is a sharp drop on last week. Stronger three-week-old Friesian bulls are being met with slightly stronger demand and are selling mainly from €50 to €60/head.
Four-week-old calves are being met with good farmer demand and prices are ranging from €70 to €80/head, with aged calves making up to €100/head in some marts. Angus heifers are selling from €120/head to €150/head, with bulls making €160 to €200/head. Herefords are selling for a €30 to €40/head premium compared to Angus calves.
