GLAS farmers will be able to take cuts of hay or silage off low-input permanent pasture from 1 September until 1 December, under new flexibilities announced by Minister Michael Creed.
For those under the environmental management of fallow land, off-takes will be permitted on a once-off basis for 2018 from 1 September, which is after nesting season, and 1 December.
It is hoped the measures will add to the stocks of winter forage available to farmers. They will come into effect from tomorrow (1 September).

Minister Creed commented: “These flexibilities have the potential to add to the quantities of winter fodder available, by bringing over 260,000 additional hectares into fodder production. I would like to thank Commissioner Phil Hogan for his early engagement and assistance in progressing my proposals on this issue.”
GLAS participants wishing to avail of these flexibilities do not need to contact the Department in advance of doing so.
