“In my area, one of the biggest challenges is calendar farming and slurry spreading when the closed period starts in October and doesn’t open again until 15 January. If you had a good winter, they should let you spread in November or early December rather than waiting until January and everyone going at the same time.”

Silvermines, Co Tipperary – beef farmer

“I’m concerned about the price of cattle, red tape and nitrates would be a concern. The environmental element of farming seems to be to the fore and farming is getting bad press with no mitigation for the good you’re doing. Everything farmers are doing seems to be anti-environment as opposed to the benefits of grazing livestock.”

John Rent

John Rent, dairy farmer. Tipperary

Nenagh, Co Tipperary – dairy farmer and finisher

“People seem to want change but I don’t think things are that bad. Anyone who wants a job seems to be able to get one. At the minute, I’m looking for someone to help with spring calving and I’m finding it very hard to find someone. I have two sons and they got third-level education which I never got. I’d like to think they’d come back to the farming but they have two good jobs.”

Patrick O’Neill

Co Longford – dairy farmer

“A better retirement scheme needs to be put in place. We need to be aware of what’s coming down the line and it’s up to us as young farmers to take the lead. Young farmers are more open-minded and understand environmental issues better.”

David Harney

Co Galway – sheep farmer

“I would like to see more access to grants and a retirement scheme so that farms can be passed on to the next generation at a younger age. More has to be done for beef and sheep on the base price level to encourage farmers to take up young full time farming.”

Emma McCormack

Co Westmeath – drystock farmer

“I would just like to see fair prices for farmers for the product we’re producing. Whether it’s beef or milk, it doesn’t really matter. We just want to be paid for the product we’re producing and not to be the target for climate change really.”
