Earlier this week, the European Parliament voted on the reauthorisation of glyphosate. The proposal on the table from the European Commission was for the 10-year reauthorisation of the herbicide.

MEPs voted against a 10-year reauthorisation period, as well as voting to bring in restrictions on its use from next year.

Of more concern to farmers is that MEPs voted to ban glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, from 2022.

    Following on from Tuesday’s parliament vote, a European Commission standing committee was set vote on the proposals today.

    The standing committee has the final say on whether glyphosate will remain on shelves at the end of this year.

    However, no vote took place, with informal discussions not bringing about any consensus. The vote is now due to take place in November, with the Commission expected to table another proposal on the reauthorisation of the herbicide.
