Older people living on their own can feel isolated and lonely and marginalised in this digital age if they can’t use technology. Smartphones can be too small and they may not remember how to use it or charge it.

The GrandPad, now on the Irish market with the company HQ based in Gorey, Co Wexford, is aimed at those over 75 or anyone who would welcome a simple version of a tablet.

It has a large bright screen and clearly labelled icons for video and voice calls, photos, email, music, games, news, weather, and search. It has no buttons or passwords or pop-ups and charging is a “drop on” rather than plug-in.

“The aim is to reduce loneliness and improve connectivity,” says Edwina Dunne, a director of the company. “The Grandpad can be life-changing for older people and their families as families can video call from their smartphone and see how they are and the person can remain – and feel – independent. This makes such a big difference in a lonely person’s life; to see and speak to a busy family member so easily, to get photographs from grandchildren, to play music tailored to their preferences.”

The GrandPad comes ready to use out of the box and features a secure private family network. Service employees liaise with family to set contact information up beforehand so that when they deliver the Grandpad everything works, eg the person can make that first video call themselves to a son or daughter abroad.

Wireless connectivity and security are built into the device, eliminating the risks of scams and hacks.

Additionally, caregivers/family members can video chat, receive voicenotes and share photos with the older person through GrandPad's companion app on i0S andAndroid.

There is 24/7/365 back up with it, with support provided by people employed in Gorey but who work from home to provide this service that will not only troubleshoot but also keep an eye on usage, thereby knowing if the person living on their own is unwell, perhaps.

The Grandpad hardware and software is free but the overall service costs €65 per month including unlimited calls. Freephone 1800-938 226 for more information.

An American company, it has now launched in Ireland. Director Edwina Dunne is a retired HSE employee.
