Pat Gilhooley, who was chair of Leitrim IFA from 2013 to 2017, is to stand in the 2019 local election.

The suckler and sheep farmer from Aughnasheelin in the south of the county will represent Sinn Féin in the Ballinamore electoral area.

Gilhooley is one of three candidates seeking the Sinn Féin ticket for the 2019 election. With only three spots available, he is almost guaranteed a space on the ticket at the convention, which takes places on Sunday 27 January at 6pm.

Mainstream politics

Gilhooley currently sits as vice-chair of the IFA’s rural development committee. He will now have to relinquish his duties on the committee as he has entered mainstream politics.

The former IFA Leitrim chair, Gilhooley played a critical role in the election of current IFA president Joe Healy, as well as his predecessors Eddie Downey and John Bryan.

In the case of Downey and Bryan, Gilhooley secured 100% of all the Leitrim branches for the two candidates.

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal on Friday, Gilhooley said he is looking forward to the contest and wants to represent the people of the area.

“I’ve always tried to put the farmers of Leitrim first in everything I have done in the IFA.

"The people and farmers of Leitrim are great people and assuming I am selected to run, I will do my all for the people of the area.”
