Over 600 farmers travelled to Athenry Mart on Saturday to dispose of tyres at the bring centre, with one farmer travelling all the way from Kerry to get rid of his tyres.

“One farmer came all the way from Kerry from it. We’re getting calls from Kerry, Cork, Donegal, west Limerick, Leitirm, Sligo and Clare to set up bring centres there,” IFA environment and rural affairs chair Thomas Cooney told the Irish Farmers Journal.

“We haven’t final numbers yet, but it was estimated that 1,200t to 1,300t of tyres were disposed of. It was the biggest turnout to date, because of its location.

“We had the new junior minister for environment Sean Canney call to the bring centre. There’s clearly a demand for this to be rolled out nationwide, with the huge turnout again today.

“We are seeking a meeting with the new Minister for Communications Richard Bruton to see if it can it be rolled out nationwide.

“These four bring centres were meant to be a pilot, but there has been unprecedented uptake of the scheme. There is demand for one bring centre per county,” Cooney said.
