There were over 110 pedigree Charollais sheep competing in the sunshine at the Athlone Agricultural Show for the 2017 national title.

William McAllister from Co Antrim, chair of the Northern Ireland region of the Artnagullion Flock, was the man to impress in the ring. His deciding view saw Declan, Mark and Joe Miley keep the Coillcuill Cup for supreme champion rosette for a third consecutive year.

The Mileys, of Knockcroghery flock, who were the overall champions in 2016 and 2015, was a frequently spotted surname on the society’s scoreboard throughout the day, but it was their ram lamb, H1917015, which claimed the overall top spot.

Having only started competing and showing Charollais sheep five years ago, the Mileys have certainly made the headlines in the sheep showing arena.

Supreme breeding

The sire of the supreme champion was Rheaedr Orlando and the dam was Oprah. Oprah claimed the 2016 and 2015 All-Ireland titles; she also won the senior ewe class at Athlone, 14ZNN09857.

Oprah was awarded the champion of champions in 2015 and 2016. The Mileys received the number two spot in the ram lamb section with H1917010. The winning ram lamb had the same sire as overall 2017 champion, Rheaedr Orlando.

Reserve supreme champion

The reserve supreme champion title was awarded to Richard Allen’s winner of the shearling ewe class, H7616004.

Just like the Mileys, Allen, of Uppertown flock, likes to travel across the Irish Sea for diversity in his flock, so the battle for supreme and reserve champion became a bit of an ironic affair.

The sire of the reserve champion was Loanhead powerhouse, the dam was 13ZNN07274. Allen also claimed second in the ewe lamb H7617008 and senior ewe 13ZNN07258 classes.

In the shearling ewe class, Allen secured the reserve champion place, while Jim and Frampton Jeffry from Midleton, Co Cork, came second with D3216018.

Senior ram class

Liam Conway from Ballinasloe, Co Galway, sealed first and second place in the senior ram class. A4615099 claimed the top spot and XYU01056 claimed second.

Frank Jordan from Attanagh, Co Kilkenny, sealed the red rosette in the Shearling ram class with H4216009, while Kevin Brady from Tullamore, Co Offaly, came second with H7616009.

Irish Charollais sheep breeders from across the country will now turn their focus to the premier male and female sale that will take place on Saturday, 29 July, in Tullow livestock sales, Tullow, Co Carlow.
