Sheep farmers from all around Leinster flocked to Carnew Mart, Co Wicklow, for the Aughrim Sheep Breeders Annual Show and Sale.

The day saw a good entry, with 2,200 sheep on offer.

Peter Behan’s first prize-winning Suffolk-cross ewe lambs weighed 61kg and sold for €202. In general, quality Suffolk-cross sold for €120 to €150 each.

Brendan Byrne won the first prize for his Cheviot ewe lambs, that 47kg and sold for €130. Good-quality Cheviot lambs made between €110 and €130/head.

Cheviot breeding ewes sold up to a top price of €230, with the general run of prices being €150 to €180.

Suffolks made a top price of €220, with the majority selling between €180 and €210.

Older breeding ewes met a strong demand, selling for between €120 and €160.

Carnew Mart owner and auctioneer David Quinn reported strong trade and a fantastic 100% clearance, while Aughrim Sheep Breeders chair Seán O’Neill also commented that the show was a great success and that he was very happy with the trade and show of sheep.

Class two – Best pen of 10 “Genuine Cheviot” ewes two years old and upwards: Helen O’Neill.

Class 3 – Best pen of 10 Suffolk-cross hogget ewes showing two teeth or lamb’s mouth: Brendan Fox.

Class 4 – Best pen of 10 Suffolk-cross ewes two years old and upwards: Peter Behan.

Class 5 – Best Pen of 10 broken mouthed ewes with good udders - any breed: Paul Steacy.

Class 6 – Best pen of 10 cast ewes: Michael Shannon.

Class 7 – Best pen of 10 Suffolk-cross wee lambs: Peter Behan.

Class 8 – Best pen of 10 fat lambs: Peter Behan.

Class 9 – Best pen of 10 store lambs: Kevin O’Neill.

Class 10 – Best pen of 10 cheviot ewe lambs: Brendan Byrne.

Class 11 – Best pen of 10 cheviot wether lambs or tan lambs: Peter Behan.

Class 12 – Best pen of 10 Genuine Mountain Cheviot ewes two years old and upwards: Breeda Devitt Durkin.

Class 13 – Best ram any breed: Pat Dunne.
