Kepak has announced a new scheme for Welsh Black cattle that will be available from January 2020.
The specifications and criteria have yet to be confirmed but suppliers will be required to undertake “vital” benchmarking exercises on herd performance, carbon foot printing, environmental management, feed and antibiotic usage.
Although there is a thriving national herd of Welsh Black cattle in Wales, it is not yet known how relevant the scheme will be to Irish farmers given that fewer than 100 Welsh Black cattle are registered in Ireland.

However, it is an indication that processors are seeking to find more niche beef products to supply to an increasingly fussy consumer market.
