DEAR SIR:

Please allow me space to comment on a letter in last week’s Irish Farmers Journal written by Philip Lynch of Co Kilkenny. I was heartened when I read his letter. Here is a farmer with vision and he is not afraid to buck the trend and say it as it is. If there were more people like him, we farmers would not be in the state we are in.

I have never been able to understand why farmers allow their land to be used and abused. I know farmers who hunt, but will not allow hunting on their land. What does that tell you?

Farmers seem to think that they have to allow every Tom, Dick and Harry to trample and destroy their fields, hedges and fences. Not so. Trespass is trespass – no matter who perpetrates it, it is an offence. If someone trespasses on your land, report them to the local Garda station.
