Owen Colgan
21 June: Owen Colgan takes to the stage again after a hugely successful 2017. The television star and comedy writer is most famous for being part of comedy troupe The Hardy Bucks, but for this Sugar Club show he’s going it alone to talk about his favourite subjects, such as mixed martial artist turned wrestler Rhonda Rousey, among other things. Colgan’s narration of the children’s classic The Snowman was a viral hit online and fans are eager to see what this king of Irish banter will do next. See www.sugarclubtickets.com.
The Snapper
23 June: Roddy Doyle’s The Snapper is getting a new lease on life at the Gate Theatre, having been adapted for the stage. Based on Roddy’s Barrytown Trilogy, a fictional community on the north side of Dublin, it focuses on ordinary families, each with their own challenges and quirks and depicting them with honesty. In The Snapper, 20-year-old Sharon Rabbite is pregnant and she won’t tell anyone who the father is. However, the truth is always revealed, and what emerges is a sweet and funny story of how one girl overcomes the embarrassment of an ill-fated night of drunkenness and how a dysfunctional, yet loving family comes together to protect one of their own. Twitching curtains and idle gossip may define Barrytown, but equally, this work is a study of families in Dublin’s tight and loving communities.
In the Fade
22 June: Out of nowhere, Katja’s life falls apart when her husband Nuri and little son Rocco are killed in a bomb attack. Her friends and family try to give her the support she needs, and Katja somehow manages to make it through the funeral. But the mind-numbing search for the perpetrators and reasons behind the senseless killing complicate Katja’s painful mourning, opening wounds and doubts. Danilo, a lawyer and Nuri’s best friend, represents Katja in the eventual trial against the two suspects: a young couple from the neo-Nazi scene. The trial pushes Katja to the edge, but there’s simply no alternative for her: she wants justice.

Michael Hurley
27 June: Folk singer Michael Hurley has charmed audiences for over 50 years with his timeless surrealist tunes and sweetly weird comics. Hurley's music sounds old, like it has always existed, but like something you've never heard anyone else play before. This timeless quality ensures Hurley's audience constantly renews itself. From the beatniks in the New York where he started in the early 1960s, Hurley’s career has spanned over five decades. Hurley resides in the US on the west coast near Portland, Oregon. His Irish appearances have been scarce the last decade or so. Old and new fans should not pass up this rare opportunity to catch Michael in action as he plays at L'Atitude 51 Wine Café, Cork.
