DEAR SIR: I read with amazement that a small percentage of dogs confiscated after attacking sheep are sent to be re-homed in England. Euthanasia for all dogs caught worrying or killing sheep should be mandatory.

On the financial side alone, the cost of seizing the dog, kennelling it and then transporting it to England makes it a ridiculous waste of money.

The farmers have not just lost a sheep, but depending on its age, its life as a breeding ewe and the cost of production up to its untimely and savage death. The rest of the flock may not have been killed but are usually badly traumatised and may die or abort their lambs leading to further loss of income.

Every year, people are asked to keep their dogs under control during the day and shut in at night, but every year we hear horrific stories about sheep worrying and killing.

People must accept responsibility for their dogs and be accountable for their actions. If micro-chipping for all dogs was enforced, proving ownership would be easier and compensation given to the farmers for their loss.
