A Newry farmer who was convicted in 2023 of causing unnecessary suffering to eight cattle has had that conviction overturned at Newry Criminal Appeals Court.

Michael Maguire, from Carrive Crescent, Cloughoge was disqualified from keeping animals for two years, received a £3,000 fine and was ordered to pay back £5,000 in reactor compensation after being accused by DAERA inspectors of interfering with a TB test.

On Wednesday 22 April 2026 the appeal put forward by Maguire was allowed, with the order of the Magistrates’ court reversed and the original complaint dismissed.
