Genomics scheme to open next week
The genotyping element of the Bovine Genetics Project is set to open for dairy and suckler beef farmers in NI on 1 September 2026.
The scheme will initially allow cattle farmers to DNA test all their current breeding animals and future replacements.
Then from January, all calves born during the 2027 calendar year will have the opportunity to be genotyped.
To cover the cost of genotyping, DAERA will pay farmers £13 per eligible ear notch sample submitted through the scheme.
To receive the payment, farmers must first opt in to the genotyping scheme by registering with industry body Sustainable Ruminant Genetics.
This is done via the Bovine Genetics Project user portal at www.srgni.com
Final week for grant scheme applications
The application window for the first round of the Sustainable Farming Investment Scheme closes at midnight on Thursday 3 September.
A grant rate of 40% is available for on-farm equipment and technology, which costs between £3,000 and £62,500, meaning the maximum grant available is £25,000.
DAERA state that the £40m scheme aims to “boost efficiency and environmental performance” of farm businesses.
The list of items which are eligible for grant support under the scheme is available on the DAERA website.
Grants will be based on DAERA’s reference price for each item, so quotes from suppliers are not needed.
