The South of Ireland Hampshire Down Premier show and sale took place in Tullow Mart on 29 July. Judge Rodney Wilson had a tough job picking out the best lambs from a very high standard at the sale.

The shearling ram class saw Edward Buckley, Co Cork, take the red rosette with Loughbrae Eagle Eye.

Swiftly afterwards came the ram lambs, which were split into two classes. The first of these classes, a December-born ram lamb class, was also won by Edward Buckley with a strong ram lamb, Kilbarry Federico.

Top place in the next ram lamb class for January-born lambs was snapped up by Alymer Power, Co Limerick, with a stylish lamb, Powerpack Fast and Furious.

In the aged ewe class, Niall Sheehan from Co Carlow won with a very correct 2023-born ewe. Lastly, in a large class of ewe lambs, Michael and Fiona White from Co Dublin came out on top with a classy ewe from their Whitehart flock.

Overall show champion went to Alymer Power’s January-born ram lamb, Fast and Furious, who later sold for €880 to Curraghmore Estate, Co Waterford.

Reserve champion went to Edward Buckley, with his December-born lamb, Kilbarry Federico.

Best opposite sex went the way of Michael White for his ewe lamb.

A busy day continued in the sale where strong interest was shown both online and at the ringside. The ram trade averaged €560/head and ewe lambs averaged €511/head.

The sale saw a top price of €920 for a January-born, double five-star ewe lamb from Alymer Power’s Powerpack flock selling to a new breeder.
