Trailers which are travelling outside the UK after Brexit will only need to be registered, the UK Department for transport (DFT) has clarified.
There were fears that the haulage permits and Trailer Registration Bill, which is currently passing through the House of Lords, could require all trailers in excess of 750kg to be registered, however, the DFT has made it clear that it is proposing only to require registration of commercial trailers weighing more than 750kg and non-commercial trailers weighing over 3,5000kg if they are travelling to or through continental Europe, excluding the Republic of Ireland.
A DFT spokesman has said: “A consideration of the farming industry and agricultural trailers has contributed to the decision not to create any domestic requirement for registration.”
