The Christmas fatstock show and charity auction for Kidney Care UK at Markethill mart. \ Peter Houston

I hear the Markethill annual charity auction was no small affair. From luxury nights away to home-baked treats, there was something for everyone – and plenty of bidders ready to splash the cash.
One dry-aged Angus ribeye fetched a sizzling £600. If we think feed prices are biting, one tonne of bull nuts was hammered down at £750. There’s life in beef farming yet.
With a packed ringside and locals digging deep, word on the street was that mart staff donated their wages for the night too.

The night raised a staggering £40,000 for Kidney Care UK – now that’s what you call farming community spirit.
