Whoever thought that foddering a few native Irish cattle on a cold and wet November evening was a cultural endeavour?

Well that’s exactly what it is, The Dealer can now confirm.

In fact, in feeding this stock, the farmer was actually adding to the country’s cultural heritage.

This is not simply The Dealer’s opinion, but that of the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD.

Minister Martin announced an extension of the National Inventory of Ireland’s Intangible Cultural Heritage to include native Irish cattle breeding and the native Irish cattle breeds among a list of eight key practices.

The breeds included in the inscription are:

  • Kerry cattle breed.
  • Dexter cattle breed.
  • Irish Maol/Moiled cattle breed.
  • Droimeann cattle breed.
  • Other practices to receive the cultural gong are the Spancilhill International Horse Fair, beekeeping, Clones crochet lace making, Headford lace making, Irish traditional travelling circus and funfair, Lá an Dreoilín/Wren’s Day, traditional Seine boat building, fishing and racing.
