The Rose of Tralee has launched its annual hunt for Ireland’s most eligible men to act as escorts. \ Domnick Walsh / Eye Focus

I see the annual rallying cry for potential Rose of Tralee escorts has been issued. The list of criteria is strict. Potential candidates must be:
Male.
21 years of age on 1 January 2018 and not 31 on or prior to 1 September 2018.
Be unmarried and have never been married.
Be born in Ireland or of Irish origin by virtue of ancestors born in Ireland.
So far, so stringent. But it’s the requirement for successful candidates to have €1,500 of sponsorship that was the straw the broke the camel’s back for this candidate. Sure I’ve that and more spent on actual straw this winter.
