The Millfarm Herd of Tim Reddan, Nenagh, Co Tipperary, held a production sale last week in Portumna Mart which included 30 freshly calved heifers and a selection of maiden heifers.

The herd average in 2020 boasted some strong performance results, with an average lactation of 5,970 litres, average butterfat at 4.05% and an average protein of 3.53%. The sale included heifers from dams with recorded yields behind them of over 7,500kg for milk and others having fat over 5% and proteins over 4%.

This February 2019-born heifer was calved on 25 February 2021 and sold for €2,150.

The online sale, which was conducted by Cork-based auctioneer Denis Barrett on MartBids, achieved a 100% clearance of the calved heifers, which included a top price of €2,420 being paid for a freshly calved February 2019-born heifer with an EBI of €156. The 30 calved heifers averaged €2,008/head.

This May 2018-born heifer was calved on 24 February 2021 and sold for €1,640.

Maiden heifers also sold well, with a 100% clearance and a top price of €1,060 being paid for a February 2020-born weanling heifer weighing 315kg. The average price for the maiden heifers that were sold was €785/head.

This March 2019-born heifer was calved on 23 February 2021 and sold for €1.960.

Mart manager Marie Young said: “We had huge interest in the sale, with calved heifers mostly selling to local dairy farmers. There appears to be more appetite from dairy farmers for calved heifers this year”

This January 2019-born heifer was calved on 8 February, had an EBI of €139 and sold for €2,060.

This April 2019-born heifer calved on 2 February 2021, had an EBI of €124 and sold for €2,010.

This February 2020-born maiden heifer weighed 270kg and sold for €810.
