The Department of Agriculture has released this year’s recommended spring cereal list.

There was just one new variety added to the list this year.

The spring wheat variety Hexham has gained provisional recommendation and will be distributed by Goldcrop.

KWS Chilham has been dropped from the spring wheat recommended list.

There have been no additions to the spring oat recommended list, but Keely has been dropped.

There has also been no new additions to the spring barley recommended list.

However, the variety Limona has been dropped.

Below is the full list of this year’s recommended varieties.

Spring wheat

Recommended

KWS Starlight: A high-yielding moderately later-maturing variety. It has very good resistance to lodging, but is susceptible to yellow rust. Moderately resistant to mildew and Septoria spp, but moderately susceptible to sprouting. It has an excellent hectolitre weight.

  • Cross: (KW 616-2-08 x KW 561-4-09) x KWS Mairra.
  • Breeder/agent: KWS Lochow (DE), Seed Technology Ltd.
  • KWS Talisker: A high-yielding moderately later-maturing variety which is moderately susceptible to lodging. It is moderately resistant to mildew and Septoria spp, but has very good resistance to yellow rust. It has good resistance to sprouting and good grain quality.

  • Cross: KWS Westfield x Pepito.
  • Breeder/agent: KWS (UK), Goldcrop Ltd.
  • Provisionally recommended

    Hexham: New to the list this year is Hexham, a very high-yielding moderately later-maturing variety. It is moderately resistant to lodging, but is moderately susceptible to mildew and Septoria spp. It has very good resistance to yellow rust and good resistance to sprouting. It also has good grain quality.

  • Spring oats

    Recommended

    Barra: First listed in 1985, Barra returns for another year. It is now a relatively low-yielding variety that is very susceptible to lodging and susceptible to straw breakdown. It is very susceptible to mildew and susceptible to crown rust. However, it still has excellent grain quality.

  • Cross: Selma x KM1 MS.
  • Breeder/agent: Svalöf Weibull (SE), Goldcrop Ltd.
  • Delfin: A very high-yielding early-maturing variety, with good resistance to lodging and moderate resistance to straw breakdown. It has very good resistance to mildew, but is susceptible to crown rust. It has good grain quality.

  • Cross: 07/107 x Canyon.
  • Breeder/agent: Nordsaat (DE), Seed Technology Ltd.
  • Husky: A very early-maturing, high-yielding variety with moderate resistance to lodging. It is moderately susceptible to straw breakdown and is moderately susceptible to mildew. It is susceptible to crown rust, but has very good grain quality.

  • Cross: Firth x Freddy.
  • Breeder/agent: Nordsaat (DE), Seed Technology Ltd.
  • WPB Isabel: A very high-yielding variety. It has good resistance to lodging and very good resistance to straw breakdown. It is moderately susceptible to mildew, but it is moderately resistant to crown rust. The variety has excellent grain quality.

  • Cross: LW 03W038-06 x Husky.
  • Breeder/agent: Wiersum (NL), Goldcrop Ltd.
  • Spring barley

    Recommended

    Gangway: A moderately later maturing variety, with moderate resistance to lodging. The variety has good resistance to straw breakdown, with very good resistance to mildew and net blotch and moderate resistance to brown rust. It is moderately susceptible to Rhynchosporium, but has excellent grain quality.

  • Cross: Zeppelin x (Natasia x Kathinka).
  • Breeder/agent: Sejet (DK), Goldcrop Ltd.
  • RGT Planet: A moderately later-maturing variety with very high yield potential. It is moderately susceptible to lodging and susceptible to straw breakdown. It has very good resistance to mildew, but is moderately susceptible to Rhynchosporium, brown rust and net blotch.

  • Cross: Tamtam x Concerto.
  • Breeder/agent: RAGT (UK), Goldcrop Ltd.
  • SY Errigal: A high-yielding, moderately later maturing variety. It has good resistance to lodging and moderate resistance to straw breakdown. It has very good resistance to mildew and net blotch and good resistance to brown rust. It is moderately susceptible to Rhynchosporium.

  • Cross: Dragoon x Mickle.
  • Breeder/agent: Syngenta (UK), Seed Technology Ltd.
  • Provisionally recommended

    Prospect: A moderately early maturing variety, which is moderately resistant to lodging and straw breakdown. It has very good resistance to mildew, but is moderately susceptible to brown rust. Good resistance to Rhynchosporium and moderate resistance to net blotch.

  • Cross: KWS Irina x Overture.
  • Breeder/agent: Sejet (DK), Goldcrop Ltd.
  • SY Arderin: A high-yield potential variety, with good resistance to straw breakdown. It is moderately susceptible to lodging. The variety is moderately later-maturing, with very good resistance to mildew. It also has good resistance to net blotch and moderate resistance to brown rust and Rhynchosporium.
