Some 18,514t of skim milk powder (SMP) sold out of EU intervention stocks at the latest tender sale which took place on Thursday, at a price of €1,585/t.

Some 376,000t of SMP have now been sold out of the measure, with just 4,000t remaining.

All Irish SMP stock has been now removed from the intervention system.

European Commissioner for Agriculture Phil Hogan said that the product was sold out of the measure in a patient and prudent way with the aim, at all times, of supporting the incomes of European dairy farmers.

“Despite the calls from some to reduce stocks through other ways or even by simply destroying the stocks, we resisted such calls,” he said.
