Charolais hit £8,000 twice in Dungannon

The Northern Ireland Charolais Club held its annual autumn show and sale of bulls in Dugannon Farmers Mart, Co Tyrone, on Friday 3 November 2017, writes Adam Woods.

Some 46 males and 18 females were forward for sale. While fodder concerns were on the lips of many attending farmers, overall trade was fair, with a clearance rate of 54% and top-quality animals sold very well.

The top-priced bull came from the herd of Caldwell McAskie, Mountjoy, Omagh, Co Tyrone. This May 2016-born Mountjoy Morgan was +12 for calving ease, which put him in the top 5% of the Charolais breed. He is by Montgomery Lanto and out of a Gaer Positive dam. Having been placed first in his class in the pre-sale show, he was eventually knocked down at £8,000.

The supreme, male and senior champion Coolnaslee Martin was next in the trade stakes at 6,000gns. He was exhibited by herd manager Stuart Wilson on behalf of his owner and new custodian of the Coolnaslee herd Jonathan Crawford, Maghera, Co Derry. The 17-month-old Martin was snapped up by Seamus Conroy, Tassagh, Co Armagh, and his breeding includes the 10,000gns Carlisle intermediate champion Ratoary Icebreaker, and dam Coolnaslee Gina.

The champion female came from the herd of Bartley Finnegan, Moy, Dungannon, Co Tyrone. Battleford Lola is by Lochend Apache and out of a Thrunton Socrates cow, Blelack USP. She broke the sale centre female breed record when she was knocked down at £8,000. She was scanned in-calf to Blelack Immaculate and is due to calve on 1 May 2018.

    Senior Vendéen ewe reaches €600

The 18th annual Vendéen in-lamb and ewe lamb sale was held in Roscommon Mart late last month. There were 22 in-lamb ewes and 14 ewe lambs on offer.

A top price of €600 was achieved for a senior ewe from Ciaran Coughlan’s Noggus Flock and purchased by Joey Walsh, Yellow Bog, Co Kildare.

Judge Declan Miley tapped out John Lynch’s shearling ewe Ballinascraw Prudence as overall champion, while the reserve went to Gilmores Valley View.

The reserve champion was later purchased by the aforementioned Joey Walsh for €400.
