Kerry butchers and farmers are celebrating after Sneem black pudding was awarded protected geographical indication (PGI) status just before Christmas.

The pudding is made using ingredients including oatmeal, onions, lambs blood and a secret supply of spices.

The Burns family butchers has been making the pudding for four generations since 1960.

Tradition

It is made by a number of producers in the area and is a traditional uncased black pudding and is free from artificial colours, flavours, bulking agents and preservatives.

Minister Michael Creed welcomed the news and said that his Department was actively engaging with stakeholders with a view to progressing applications for a number of additional Irish products.
