The amount of Bord Bia Quality Assured meat on supermarket shelves has fallen for some meat categories, an annual Bord Bia retail audit has found.

Each product is assessed based on the percentage of “facings” (individual products on shelf) and product lines with the Bord Bia quality mark.

The audit found that 81% of pork surveyed on shelves carried the QA mark, down from 93% and 97% in 2016 and 2015, respectively.

The figures show that the amount of rashers, sausages and bacon carrying the mark on shelves has increased.

Burger facings with the QA mark also fell, to 58% in 2017 compared to 74% in 2015. Beef with the QA mark was down marginally from 95% to 93%.

The amount of pre-packed fresh chicken and turkey carrying the QA mark rose slightly year-on-year, while lamb facings fell. Products covered in the audit are bacon, beef, burgers, chicken, cooked ham, duck, lamb, pork, rashers, sausages and turkey.

Auditors visited 18 stores as part of the audit, which included the main supermarkets.
