In search of a meeting point for the many local retired tradesmen in the area, Mountrath Men’s Shed in Co Laois was established in July 2016 by Rev Ian Poulton, Fr Joe Brophy, Pauric Tobin, Keith Mason and Seamus Burke, with the help and support of the local Mountrath Community Forum.

“As well as a social outlet and a chance to chat without pressure, the shed gives so many highly skilled retired men of Mountrath a chance to share their great ideas and keep up their craftship,” says Seamus, who is treasurer and spokesperson for the shed.

True to the ethos of Men’s Shed Association, the Mountrath shed works to improve and maintain their members’ health and well-being. First-aid courses, defibrillator training, pesticide courses and organised health checks ensure that the men of Mountrath are well-equipped with support to look after both mind and body.

Other opportunities available to members include a place at the monthly Cottage Market in Mountrath town centre, at which the shed’s homegrown fruit and veg is sold. Creativity continues in the workshop where the lads concentrate on woodwork projects such as bird boxes, flower containers and bee boxes. These items are sold to local farmers and the profits are used to sustain and develop the organisation.

For instance, the recent purchase of a polytunnel was welcomed by all members, who look forward to planting and maintaining seeds and bulbs, which will be donated to the local Tidy Town’s initiative. Their handmade flower boxes are also presented to the Tidy Town’s committee, contributing to the blossoming character of Mountrath.

With members from all trades and professions and of all ages, Mountrath Men’s Shed keeps its door open to new members all year round. “Call in to the Men’s Shed in the old girls’ school any Tuesday or Thursday evening and see what it’s all about,” Seamus advises.
