There is no upward movement in the lamb trade this week, with prices in some marts in the west possibly €1 to €2 easier in cases.

The trade in the east is being underpinned by keen demand from wholesale buyers and relatively tight supply.

Here, top-quality lambs weighing upwards of 52kg are trading on average from €175 to €185/head, with select lots of very heavy lambs exceeding €190/head.

Lambs weighing around 50kg are selling anywhere from €170 to €178, depending on quality and flesh cover.

In contrast, lambs weighing 52kg to 54kg-plus traded in many marts along the western half of the country are struggling to exceed €175, with quality lots curtailed at €177 and only select lots hitting €180.

Likewise, lambs weighing around 50kg are trading from €168 to €173 on average. It is a similar case for lambs weighing 47kg to 48kg, with prices ranging from €160 to €170, depending on mart location and lamb quality.

The trade for stores is relatively steady. Lowland lambs are trading anywhere from €3.40/kg to €3.70/kg-plus, with select ewe lambs with breeding potential selling to a top of €4/kg and possibly higher for light quality hill lambs.

Crossbred lambs range from €3.20/kg to €3.50/kg, with some plain-quality or lambs with stunted growth back to €3/kg to €3.15/kg.

Scottish Blackface lambs are selling upwards of €3/kg for short-keep and well-fleshed lots, with some longer-keep and poorer-quality types falling back below €3/kg.

The cull ewe trade is subdued, with a price per kilo range of €1.95/kg to €2.10/kg buying the majority of fleshed cull ewes.

Select lots are selling above this, but only small numbers are topping the €2.20/kg mark. Plainer-quality ewes with a cover of flesh are still trading from €1.80/kg to €2/kg, with ewes with an average to poor cover of flesh selling back to €1.50/kg.

Ewes very short of flesh cover or boner-type ewes and poorer-quality Scottish Blackface ewes are trading from €1/kg to €1.20/kg, with some light-carcase ewes likely to kill at fat score one falling below €1/kg.
