There was good news around the ring for sellers at this week’s sheep sale in Kilkenny, with a booming trade for all types of sheep.

There were 350 sheep on offer, and these were scooped up by a number of buyers with strong online activity coming from wholesalers.

“We hadn’t enough sheep for all the buyers here on Monday,” said auctioneer George Candler. “There were bids coming from all sides with a good lift in the trade on last week, which is wanted for the sellers who put a lot of work into rearing these lambs.”

Spring lambs purchased by both butchers and wholesalers – heavier-type lambs weighing over 45kg – sold from €210/head up to €254/head. A number of these lambs weighing over 50kg sold around the €250/head mark.

Factory-type lambs weighing from 40kg to 45kg sold in the range of €190/head up to €230/head, with a good portion achieving €5/kg.

Cull ewes met a brisk trade with prices varying from €124/head up to €280/head. There was strong competition for well-fed, well-bred ewes weighing over 100kg with many of these crossing the €250/head mark.

The lift in trade comes on the back of a 20c/kg rise in factory quotes this week, as a number of shippers resume buying lambs again.
