Silage season got under way a little earlier than usual in Co Louth, when a farmer mowed a cover crop of grass and oats on 2 January.

Craig Bell explained how the crop had been sown around August in the field near Castlebellingham, and owing to the dry weather, had been left longer than usual for harvesting.

The grass was picked up and moved to a pit on Friday 4 January.

The dry weather also allowed a farmer in Ardee, Co Louth, to cut a crop of Italian ryegrass at the beginning of December.
