The incident happened on Wednesday 20 June and farmer Tom Rawson described the event as “the worst night in my 20 years of dairy farming”.
Originally thought to be a mass case of bloat, the deaths were then suspected to have been caused by water contamination.
Rawson, a former Nuffield scholar, thanked his vet and family who helped to save over 30 remaining cows.
Fresh water for existing stock was supplied by Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, with two other local emergency services also providing assistance.
Last night, we attended an incident at @Evo_Farming in Houghton to provide assistance in providing drinking water for cows after more than 50 cows were killed. @LFRSWigston_ and @Loughborough999 provided water from our water carrier and a nearby hydrant. #NotJustFires pic.twitter.com/kSBzPENIK9
