Met Éireann has warned that temperatures are set to fall to between -2°C and -5°C, and possibly even colder in some locations on Tuesday 5 January.

Affected regions will include, Cavan, Clare, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Longford, Mayo, Monaghan, Roscommon, and Sligo. Met Éireann's ststus yellow low temperature/ice warning is valid from 6pm on Tuesday to 10am on Wednesday 6 December.

Farmers are being warned to take care and that preventative action should be taken to guard against frozen pipes and machinery.

December weather

The freezing conditions are likely to compound December weather conditions which saw above average rainfall in most places, highest in the south and west of the country.

Valentia in Kerry saw the highest overall rainfall in December with 244.8mm - 145% of its long-term average (LTA). Newport in Mayo saw the highest daily rainfall, with 27.5mm received in one day.
