Bart Maertens in Co Kildare

Bart Maertens is a potato farmer from Loughanure, Clane, Co Kildare. Bart has been forced to spend an additional €15,000 since the beginning of the drought on man power, including the digging of a new well and also on diesel for tankers to keep moving water. Despite this, his yield looks like it will be drastically reduced. The potatoes are smaller and rather than each plant producing around 12 potatoes, they are producing only seven or eight. With the lack of rain, Bart has applied foliar fertilisation as pellets are not being absorbed into the dry soil. \ Philip Doyle
